Leaf Peeping Date Night Ideas
If you’ve looked at the mountains recently, you know that fall has arrived! It’s crazy, and really sad, how quickly the leaves change and how soon the season is over. Luckily for us, we get a few weeks to enjoy the changing leaves, starting in the mountains, hitting the foothills next, and then coloring our neighborhoods. And you can make a date night of it! This post includes ideas for making a date night out of viewing the fall leaves and the best places to see fall leaves in the Davis County area.
Fall Leaf Peeping Date Ideas
Take a cup of hot cocoa or cider leaf peeping with you
Hot chocolate season is my favorite and it starts for me every year when the leaves start to turn and the morning air has a nip in it. And one of my favorite ways to enjoy hot chocolate is while on a drive to see those fall colors. Check out this post for a fun hot chocolate date idea you can add to your leaf peeping date and a list of the best hot cocoa you can find in Davis County.
Roll the windows down if you’re driving
If you’re on a drive to see all of the leaves in the area, open your sunroof and at least crack the windows. Fall air is the best because it’s still pretty warm with a cool breeze. Take in the leaves with more of your senses than just sight.
Enjoy the sounds of leaves crunching under your feet on a walk
After you’ve driven around looking at leaves, pick a spot to get out and enjoy them up close and personal. The colors are even more stunning when you’re right there next to them. And you can enjoy the sound of the already fallen leaves below your feet. It doesn’t get much better than that!
Take pictures of the two of you with the bright colors
Fall is the most popular time for family photos for a reason! Yes, it gives you recent pictures to put on holiday cards to send to all of your friends and family. But the season also has some of the best scenery and views. Search out your favorite fall leaf locations on a date night, then plan a photo session for the two of you and your little family. Or snap some selfies while you are out and share your favorite local leaf locations with your friends on social media.

The Best Places to See the Fall Leaves in Davis County
Farmington Canyon
We’ve driven up Farmington Canyon and back a couple of times as a family and every time it’s breathtaking. Right now, when the leaves are at their peak color is the best time for a canyon drive. Pack a picnic to enjoy from the top, where you can overlook the valley and the canyon filled with colors at the same time. If a hike is more your thing, check out this post from Discover Davis for the best Farmington Creek Trail information.
Fernwood Trail
I have a friend who hikes this trail on a regular basis and the colors were stunning a couple of years ago when I joined her. It’s also listed on Discover Davis’ Best Places to See Fall Leaves in Davis County post. Check out this post from Discover Davis with Fernwood Trail hiking information and directions for turning it into a bigger hike if you’re up for it.
Wild Rose Trail
I love the Wild Rose Trail, especially in the evening. Dress warm and hike the trail before the sun sets, to watch it set from one of the overlook points on the trail. You’ll have a great view of the entire valley, the sun setting on the horizon, and planes taking off and landing at the airport to the south. And did I mention the fall leaves you can hike through before the sun goes down? Because that’s the added bonus this time of year.

Mueller Park Canyon
My personal favorite fall leaf view in Davis County is Mueller Park Canyon as you drive east on 1800 S in Bountiful, from Orchard Drive. You turn this corner and come up over a hill and the canyon opens up in front of you in the most breathtaking way! I’m sure driving further into the canyon and hiking the trails is gorgeous as well! But I could drive up 1800 S over and over again and never tire of it, especially in the fall.
Lagoon Trail
In the heart of Farmington is a trail that is paved and surrounded by trees. Any portion of the trail you decide to walk will be stunning as the leaves in the valley turn colors and the leaves start to fall. It’s also a gorgeous place to take family pictures this time of year.
Farmington Main Street
Walk or drive your way from one end of Main Street to the other, between State Street and 500 North. On the south end of Main Street is a cute cafe, Caffe Torino, where you can enjoy the trees while you eat crepes and drink coffee or hot cocoa.
Nicholls Park
There is a trail tucked away by the creek that runs past Nicholls Park on the north side. It’s covered in trees and shaded all summer long. As the colors start to change in the fall, it would be the perfect low-key walk to take to enjoy the fall sights and the cool breeze.
